Let our Voices be heard, Federal Laser Certification

I was personally informed today by Representative Eileen McGeoghegan of District 077 herself that the Federal Government is working on a Laser Certification for all noncommercial Laser related products, Such as Laser Diodes, Laser Pointers, Laser heads,, Etc.

She has put me in personally contact with Congressman Lacy Clay.
I have spoken to the Congressman himself and will be speaking with him again in the near future on this matter.

What I am asking is for everyone to post what they want in this new Federal Law.
Even if you don’t live in the states I still want your input.

If you feel that there should be stiffer punishments for the Dumb Ass’s that beam aircraft then post it.

If you feel that there should be stiff punishments for the Dumb Ass’s Parents that allowed them to buy the Laser then post that.

If you feel that there should be a certain age on a specific power then post that.

There is only a place in this thread for positive statements,, anything negative or derogatory will either be edited out or totally Deleted.

We have a chance to make a positive difference here people and keep our hobby safe so lets not let this chance slip through our fingers.

The first step is to identify the problem accurately, and verify that what we deem problematic is actually the thing that we want to fix.
Why do lasers and/or laser users need to be certified? Is it because of the increase in aircraft lasing incidents? Or is it a combination of that with some other problem?

Assuming that the problem is only with aircraft being targeted then we already have a law in place to deal with that problem. It is a federal felony offense. Requiring users to certify will not curb this problem. The responsible ones will certify and then continue to not do reckless things. The stupid people (not ignorant, stupid) will disregard the law and remain uncertified and still target aircraft.

Is the problem with the ability of the government to control laser use? Does government want the ability to ask citizens at any time for their “papers” regarding the light they are using.. or else? If this is the case then certification of laser light users/products is the route to go. This would enable any law-enforcement officer to walk up to a citizen and request their certification and then if said certification is not available, be able to take that light away and give them a ticket and/or put them in jail.
This is highly detestable to me as a libertarian.

Is the problem with cheap lasers that are available from China (we all know the issues with people that are not held accountable for their actions and know they will not be) and are readily available to the poor and/or young in our society that have no education regarding the safe use of these lasers? In this case a law (I know, the Chinese might still ignore implementation) requiring a safety education guide be included with the sale of every laser.

My plea to our elected officials: Don’t have big brother step in and regulate the end user of laser products. This will stifle creativity and enjoyment.

I would like to know why the government wants to certify non-commercial laser related products before giving a fuller opinion.
